windowpains

If midway between breakfast and lunch is brunch, then midway between winter and summer should be winmer… or sumter! Whether you call it winmer, sumter, or “spring” as the educated folks do, it’s become that hazy limbo of a season that can’t quite decide whether winter is over or whether summer has begun.

I’m sure there are some idyllic places where the four seasons slide gently into eachother in quiet sucession, each taking over where the last one left off, like a synchronized relay race.

beautiful, isn't it?

However, here in the southwest, winter may officially start running, but autumn and summer keep pace, periodically taking over whenever they feel like it. In the spring, winter still blows through with cold winds and nights, while summer likes to get an early start by making the days so hot you can cook dinner in your car most afternoons.

see?... looks like it's cookies for dinner again!

Because the nights are still cold, we still have the heater up and running in our apartment. This means that the only way to cool down the apartment is to get a nice breeze running through the apartment by opening the windows.

Hence the windowpains.

In the morning and during the day— the windows go up! Then when it gets cold at night — the windows go down! Up in the morning! Down in the evening! Up morning! Down evening! Up! Down! Up! Down! Up! Down! Up! Down! Up! Down! Up! Down! Up! Down! Up! Down! Up! Down…

…until I feel like I’m in a Winnie-the-Pooh lyric.

Despite the annoyance, all this lifting up and pushing down may come in handy later, because when summer finally does get here my abs will be rock hard… well, maybe a little less stuffed with fluff.
