earth and water make

I am a person of earth:
strong, stable, surrounded by sand.

You are a person of water:
fresh, fluid, flowing free.

Earth and water make mud:
Destructive, damp, and draining
clumping to the bottom of shoes,
dirtying all it touches.

But earth and water make clay,
you say.
Clay:
simple, soft, and soothing
smoothing under a potter’s hands
burning pure in a kiln’s fire
vessel for water
cleansing all who stroke the surface.

I am earth.
You are water.

But which earth?
and which water?
are We?
